“For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your head turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return” – Leonardo da Vinci
Hang Gliding is the closest thing you can get to flying like a bird and Interlaken is one of the the best places in the world to do it! What could you ask more for a perfect holiday plan..!!
If you are well-traveled and have seen the grandeur of natural landforms and the beauty of architecture in other parts of the world, then all I can say is, ditch all your ideas of visiting the lakes and the castles or historical sites at Interlaken.
But the one experience you cannot leave Interlaken without is Hang gliding.
Paragliding is heavily marketed in Interlaken, but believe me, Hang gliding is the real deal.
There are people who have tried both and almost all prefer hang gliding.
1) Hang gliding gives you the sensation of true flying, cos you are “lying down” instead of sitting up like in Paragliding.
2) Hang gliding is enjoyable in most weather conditions, while the para-gliders have it difficult even in normal windy conditions. (I witnessed a tandem para-glider not being able to take off when I took off perfectly while doing tandem hang gliding).
To be fair, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz are nice, and certainly the Jungfrau mountains are a UNESCO site for a reason. But in hang gliding, you get a bird’s eye view of EVERYTHING! So unless you really want to physically be on the Jungfrau or the lakes, there is no compelling reason why you would need to choose them over hang gliding. Of course, if you have the luxury of time, go ahead and do everything. In short, hang gliding is a must-do at Interlaken. (A 70 year old man did it just before I flew; granted, he was a bit of a daredevil, but that shows it almost physically possible for all ages). It’s time to fly, people!
So here I started with my Hang gliding adventure..!!
To be honest I’m a person who is afraid of heights, water, fire, darkness, loneliness.. Aahh.. the list is endless! But then the only reason which took my fear away was the breathtaking view I was about to feel while flying.
Eddie made my flight a perfect blend of smooth scenic flight and an adrenaline pumping thrill ride.
